Praxis is pleased to present Praxis Prints: 40 YEARS, an exhibition highlighting our collection of Limited Edition Silkscreens by the best Latin American artists. The exhibition will be open from January 20th to February 5th, 2022. Our hours are Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 6pm, at 501 W 20th Street, New York, NY, 10011.
Founded in 1977 in Buenos Aires by Argentinean philanthropist Miguel Kehayoglu, Praxis’s mission is to bring the rich heritage and the compelling creativity of Latin American and Latinx art forward to a worldwide audience throughout its network of galleries in Buenos Aires and New York. Praxis proudly represents a select group of renowned and emerging contemporary artists from some of the world’s most diverse and dynamic cultures. With its wide reach and the broad scope of its programming, Praxis has become the source for works in a variety of media – paintings, sculpture, drawings and prints – by established Latin American masters and by the region’s most important new talents.
More Information
Since 1981, through our editing house, Praxis has focused on releasing limited edition silkscreens, created by both new and established Latin American artists, in an effort to fulfill our mission of introducing latin american art to both young and established collectors. For the last 20 years, Praxis Print House in Buenos Aires has functioned as a laboratory where artists of all types are invited to experiment with this technique. Thus, our silkscreens are produced by both the artists, who supervises the edition, and the master serigrapher. Originated in China, the silkscreen technique was revitalized again in Europe by the Pop-Art movement during the 50’s, and then became popularized by Andy Warhol, who saw great creative potential in it and turned it into an icon of the artistic movement. To create one, color is transferred to paper through a drawing of black lines on a silk frame that was previously emulsified with a photosensitive gel. While originally the technique was developed for images of flat colors, in Praxis’s workshop we explored and expanded its possibilities, achieving gradients, color superimpositions, transparencies, textures and reliefs that make the Praxis Collection silkscreen prints unique.
Praxis’s artists defy the notion that Latin American art is a monolith and, in contrast, show us the wide spectrum of styles, movements and aesthetics that can arise from such a capacious identity: from artists like Platz or Tulio de Sagastizabal, masters of the geometric abstraction; to Maria Berrios’s japanese collages; Hernán Salamancos’s intense landscapes, or Marta Minujín 3D drawings of her famous pillow sculptures. Praxis’s purpose is to serve as a space for artists to explore the ever changing question of what it means to be Latino.
