Melissa Misla | Bendita Casita

Misla’s inviting pieces share her personal home with the viewers and encourage us to become part of it, while warmly reminding us of our own homes. Looking at her pieces is very much like staring at the sea or the forests that are all around Puerto Rico. For many Latinos it’s hard to look away because these are memories of the land that mothered them. Misla explores issues of identity within her diaspora. As in all immigrant cultures, the Puerto Rican diaspora is going through a generational change. Her work delivers a strong and slightly disorienting yet celebratory feeling of being in two places at once.
