How much does a force weigh at rest? How do I represent a falling body? How does something hide in a cloud? Is it possible to define a deep, dark color without it becoming dense? What is the level of aperture that a color or a light needs? To paint is to inhabit that not knowing, it is to be in the question and through the testing of intuition to give a material form to what questions me. So I try, I build, I choose, I understand how something works, I incorporate it, I doubt, I feel like I’m losing it, I stop understanding, I trust that that information is somewhere inside me, I insist again, I remain.
Drawing, says Balthus, “translates something that comes from within one, and that goes to meet reality. It helps to read the deep structure of things.” From that need arises the vital force. I understand that what I want to paint are those forces, affects or emotional states that appear to me in everyday life, creating an image that represents them, a painting that gives them a body.
That relationship between the mystery and the question that pulses and the translation of the sensible to the material is going to be done by painting. In this encounter with the painting practice I realize that I put together a system, which is a thought reflection of my own logic. From this refuge-territory I communicate with the environment, and thanks to painting, I know and understand.
